Description

Cheesy meatball subs made with homemade meatballs simmered in marinara sauce and topped with melted mozzarella and provolone cheese.


Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef or mix of beef and pork

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1 large egg

1/4 cup grated onion

2 cloves garlic minced

1 tsp Italian seasoning

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 cups marinara sauce

4 hoagie or sub rolls

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

4 slices provolone cheese optional

1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

1 tbsp butter optional

Fresh basil or parsley optional


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400°F and combine meatball ingredients in a bowl

2. Mix gently and roll mixture into 1 to 1.5 inch meatballs

3. Bake meatballs for 18 to 20 minutes until browned

4. Simmer cooked meatballs in marinara sauce for 10 to 15 minutes

5. Split rolls and toast lightly with butter if desired

6. Fill rolls with meatballs and sauce

7. Top with mozzarella and provolone cheese

8. Broil for 2 to 3 minutes until cheese melts

9. Sprinkle parmesan and herbs then serve

Notes

Do not overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender

Toasting the rolls helps prevent soggy bread

Serve immediately for best texture
