Classic cabbage rolls are a timeless comfort food dinner made with tender cabbage leaves stuffed with a savory mix of beef, pork, rice, and herbs, then baked in a rich tomato sauce.
Ingredients
1 medium head cabbage (3 pounds)
1/2 pound uncooked ground beef
1/2 pound uncooked ground pork
1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce, divided
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup uncooked long grain rice
1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dill or dill weed
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
1. Cook cabbage in boiling water until outer leaves pull away easily
2. Set aside 12 large leaves for rolls
3. Combine beef, pork, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, onion, rice, parsley, salt, dill, and cayenne
4. Cut V-shaped notch from each cabbage leaf
5. Place 1/4 cup filling on each leaf and fold sides
6. Roll tightly starting from cut end
7. Slice remaining cabbage and place in Dutch oven
8. Arrange rolls seam side down over cabbage
9. Mix diced tomatoes, sugar, and remaining sauce
10. Pour over rolls
11. Cover and bake at 350°F for 1.5 hours until tender
Notes
Do not overcook cabbage leaves to avoid tearing
Pack rolls tightly to keep shape
Add extra sauce if needed during baking
